How to Start Automatic Writing (Even If You Think You Can’t Channel Messages)
My first session stunned me. Here’s what I learned—and how you can try it today
The Universe kicked me in the pants today.
I’m a bit stunned—and full of wonder. It sent me a series of messages that gave me deep confidence in what I’m building in my new woo business venture. But more than that, it provided the wisdom for me to support you: You too can receive this kind of guidance, for whatever venture you are up to. And it is not that hard.
I’ll explain how in a moment.
If you’ve read any of my posts recently, you’ll know I’m in the process of launching WooBiz, a platform and soon-to-be podcast for spiritually curious entrepreneurs and business leaders who want to tap into their intuitive edge. WooBiz explores metaphysical tools—like remote viewing, synchronicities, energy alignment, and inner knowing—with practical business strategy to help you grow your business, unlock creativity, and lead with clarity and confidence.
To fully commit to the woo skills I’m learning (and teaching), I’ve been diving into the practices my new metaphysical mentors are showing me.
Channeling’s accessible cousin
That brings me to channeling—and its more approachable cousin, automatic writing.
I recently interviewed psychic medium Shawn Martin, who is one of the first guests on the WooBiz podcast (launch date coming very soon, my wife and producer Kay Walker is editing the first 3-4 episodes for a bulk initial release by the end of June).
Shawn has a remarkable gift: He channels messages from the divine. In the physical world, a channel is a waterway—something that carries flow from one place to another. That same idea applies in the metaphysical sense. Shawn connects to a higher realm, receives messages and passes them on to the people he is with. (More about Shawn)
Sometimes he channels from his source. Sometimes the information comes from a person who has died or from a person’s Higher Self. This information flows through him. That’s why he’s called a channel.
Is this real?
Sounds mystical, right? To see him in action is a wonder. I had two thoughts after seeing him demonstrate his woo skills. One: How is this possible? Because it sure seems fantastical that a retired primary school teacher can connect to the spirit world and provide actual useful business information to the person in front of him (or often via a Zoom call). Yet he does this with ease and his channeled messages are immensely helpful and on the mark.
The second question I had after witnessing his version of woo is: Can I channel too?
It turns out, yes, I can. Anyone can.
In the interview, Shawn show me an exercise where I can use automatic writing as a starting point to channel my own messages.
Oh goodie! New and fun skills, I thought.
I had vaguely heard about automatic writing before, but but haven’t ever had the nerve to try it.
It is a simple form of channelling and anyone can do it. (You too.)
You will see how it works in detail below. But in its simplest form, you chill out, put pen to paper (or fingers to keyword) and let flow whatever comes to mind. The messages that come can be surprising and often insightful.
I decide to try the automatic writing exercise Shawn taught on the podcast episode myself. I wanted to see what would come through for me. I will include the concise steps you can follow at the bottom of this post, but here is how I interpreted them and used them for myself.
Start on the couch
I started by mediating quietly on the couch in my living room with our dog Charley the Golden Retriever beside me. This is helpful because it gets you in a chilled state and it helps open a channel up. (Dog not required.) Get relaxed and receptive and quiet your mind. This is the state you need to be in for automatic writing to work.
I closed my eyes and focused on my breath. Thoughts came and went and after about 14 or 15 minutes or so I was in a lovely mellow state (and the dog was lightly snoring next to me).
Then I picked up my mobile phone. Shawn told me you can type or write freehand on a piece of paper or lined pad. My handwriting is terrible, so I opened my iPhone and fired up the Notes app.
Now a little tip here. Make sure you are either neutral or positive about trying a woo skill like automatic writing. It is important because it allows energy to flow. If you don’t believe or if you are negatively cynical, it won’t work. The internal critic will kill any connection and block any information flow that might come.
If you plug a channel of water, the flow will stop. So you have to be open to allow it to work. You don’t have to believe, you just have to willing.
I positioned my fingers on my phone’s virtual keyboard and thought, hmm I wonder how this… (is going to go). Before I could get the thought completely formed, my fingers started to type. Here is what came through:
This is a way to see where you are at because you need to evaluate how far you have come in your short journey into the woo. Your psychic abilities are building and your habits are aligning with your intentions.
What was fascinating here was how quickly it came out of me. I had no conscious thought of what my fingers were going to type next. In fact the messages flowed through my mind faster than I could strike the keys. You know when you step into the shower, turn on the flow toggle and get a face full of cold water? The info came at me like that. And I mentally spluttered a bit with surprise.
Then the advice:
You need to keep at the practices for at least 30 more days. Do not miss a meditation session. Go for 30 days without fail and your weight will decrease, your third eye will open, and the world will be linear beneath your feet.
There’s a lot to unpack in this short passage. If you’ve been following my posts, you’ll know I’ve been trying to lose weight. My Higher Self seems to know this too—and it wasn’t about to soft-sell the idea. The message wasn’t mean, but it was definitely direct.
FYI: The Higher Self, mystics say, is your soul’s wise, eternal aspect—guiding you with clarity, intuition, purpose, and alignment beyond the ego. For the scientifically minded, the Higher Self may simply be the subconscious mind—where intuition, insight, and deep pattern recognition originate.
The message also mentioned “linear beneath your feet.” I’m not exactly sure what that means. It could’ve been my poor typing (with autocorrect trying to compensate), or it might have been a direct message about being on a linear path. My mentors say not to judge what comes through, so I took it at face value.
The message went on to be—thankfully—encouraging:
Do not think you cannot do it, for you can and you will. It is your destiny to turn out as an intuitive who can move mountains with simple statements. Your essence is growing from a small and tiny trickle to a torrent of flow that, once developed, will be immovable and you will inspire others in the world.
Now this is good news, because, to be honest, I have been battling with my confidence as I have stepped into this journey.
There is no cannot in your world. There is only how big you want to expand to. Do not put limitations on yourself, because if you open up to the Universe, it will provide you with what you need.
This is consistent with previous messages I have received consulting with intuitives and in prior mediative states.
And then came more actions. Now I have been fairly consistent with asking for specifics from alternate realms, my guides, my Higher Self, or wherever this information comes from.
So it gave me exactly that.
Eat less. Sleep more. Sing. Embrace light as it grows inside you and let it shine beyond the confines of your own limitations. The spirit within you is stronger than you know.
So I am going to eat less, sleep more and sing. Not that I am much of a singer, but I will bring more music into my life. Singing also brings me joy. And I think that is the point of the message. Be more joyful. Radiate the light.
Plus I get the shivers when I hear a good Coldplay song or play some of my 80s favorites (Asia, Duran Duran, Electric Light Orchestra) on Spotify. This resonates.
And then as fast as the flow came, it ended with a simple message.
That is all for today. Thank you. Be well. Love from the Universe.
Love. From. The Universe. How very wonderful.
Know that you can do this too.
Here is a cheatsheet so you can try it yourself:
Step-by-Step:
How to Use Automatic Writing to Channel Messages For Yourself From the Universe
Set Your Intention
Silently ask to connect with your Higher Self, spirit guides, God (if that aligns for you), or a source aligned with truth and clarity. Example:
“I welcome clear, helpful messages from the divine.”Clear the Mind
Let go of thoughts, fear, doubt, or desire for “right answers.” Be neutral and open.Start Writing
Place your pen on paper (in my case put my fingers on the keyboard) and allow the first words or images to flow. Don’t judge. Just write whatever comes—even if it seems random or unrelated.Stay in Flow
If you notice your ego analyzing or doubting, pause, breathe, and return to allowing. Expect some early weirdness—it’s part of the process.Stop When It Feels Right
You may get a sense of completion or receive a message like “we’ll stop here.” Trust it. Later, review the writing for patterns or insights.
Try it, and let me know if it worked for you. You can reach me at andy@cyberwalker.com or leave a comment.
